I was going to take some things from an old Windows OS laptop plus use to back up from my Mac.I dont know if that is ok to do Also I now read on the Apple Community support that High Sierra installation has had numerous problems accessing files from external hard drives and being unable to use Time Machine etc.A lot of the info went over my head but I am left concerned that should I use the hard drive to store what I have and then install the High Sierra OS I may encounter problems or worse lose precious data.Apple seem to lack communication with their customers and are difficult to contact directly with concerns.
