These guys all lived in the Orchard Park Projects in Roxbury, Boston back in 1978. Bobby Brown was playing at a local talent show when he got a bout of stage fright. His friends in the audience went on stage to perform with him to soothe his fears and the band was born. Two of the groups original members, Travis Pettus and Corey Rackley, left the group and were replaced by Ralph Tresvant who had a singing group of his own with Rick; and Ronnie DeVoe, who was Paynes nephew. They entered a singing competition at the Strand Theater in Hollywood, which was being hosted by the producer and singer Maurice Starr. ![]() Starr was impressed and invited New Edition to the studio to record what would be one of their greatest hits, the very next day after the talent competition. Candy Girl was a part of a whole album that also features songs such as Is This The End, Jealous Girl, and Popcorn Love. Some of these singles went to the number one spot on the UK singles chart as well as the RB singles chart. Each member of New Edition received a check for their hard work. It was made out for 1.87 dollars. Thats it. When the boys complained, the label explained that they had to deduct for the touring and other expenses. New Edition, for their part, wanted out of their contract with Streetwise, so they hired legal representatives to help them.
